Homeschool

When I first started homeschooling I asked everyone about the details of their homeschooling day/curriculum/life in general!  I was desperate to learn EVERYTHING I could about this leap we were taking to teach our children at home.  When I ran out of people to ask, the good Lord put, "Real Life Homeschooling" by Rhonda Barfield, in front of me and I promptly checked it out from the library.  Real Life Homeschooling chronicles the lives of 21 different families, a typical day, a list of the curriculum they use, and their thoughts and reflections therewith.

I was truly inspired.  Through this book and other homeschool mom blogs, I learned how homeschooling is what you make it.  There really is no wrong or right.  I was encouraged, especially on those rough days.  I realized I could do this!

That is why, when I learned about The Homeschool Chick's weekly meme, "The Homeschool Mother's Journal", I knew I had to participate.  The Homeschool Mother's Journal has changed hands since then, but the concept is still the same.

Parents get together each week, viritually, and share their homeschooling experiences and latest school/family related tidbits.  I participated through elementry and middle school almost religiously.  Then, as high school barreled on and I came across families afraid to teach at home beyond 8th grade, I knew I was being called to be a voice on the subject.

God's provision of guidance and stories to encourage me in my journey of homeschooling has had such a huge impact on our lives.  I feel He is calling me to be just one voice, among the many other wonderful voices, participating at week's end, sharing our experiences in homeschooling so others may be inspired and encouraged.

Almost every week, around Friday/Saturday, I share a post about school from the week.  I hope you will join me!

 *** UPDATE***  (December 2018)
I haven't updated this page with the weekly articles since 2013! However, I have continued to post 'journal' entries.  I keep this list here for easy reference on our earlier years of homeschooling, however, you can see more current articles listed with a title tag of "HMJ" and follow their thread from my main page or search "Homeschool Mother's Journal" using the search box in the right hand column or topic thread at the bottom of the site.

Many Blessings....

All the Ways Not to Perform an Experiment

Saturday, February 2, 2013
I've seen this quote in various forms and suggesting various quantities of attempts... but you get the idea.  And while we were not trying to develop a light bulb this week... we took the Edison stance in our attempts at a science project this week!

Mid-Year Masony Meanderings
Friday, January 25, 2013
I do not know what we would have done this year without God's leading on reading about Charlotte Mason.  Pocketful of Pinecones alone has had SUCH a HUGE impact on our homeschool this year.....

Cold Mornings and Hot Pancakes

Saturday, January 19, 2013
It was a cold morning... one of the coldest in Phoenix for the year.  Hard to believe we wore shorts and sandals yesterday... because Tuesday, it was COLD!

Change is Good
Thursday, December 27, 2012
We entered Arizona and almost instantly there was change.  Not that, uh-oh, hold onto your boots kind of change.  No.  More of an almost back to normal change!

Surrounding Us
Thursday, December 13, 2012
It has been a roller coaster season in our family.  I can't even say "in our household" as we bounce between houses, RV, hotels and who knows what could be next!  Yup, roller coaster...

A New Advent Season

Saturday, December 1, 2012
The advent season has arrived.  Every year, living in Montana, Ernie (one of Santa's head elves) took the reindeer for a test run and dipped down into our neck of the woods.  He would stop off for some late night cocoa and leave behind a new Christmas movie or book, some ornaments for the children and (our favorite) the Christmas count-down chain...

How we Homeschool Outside the Box

Saturday, November 10, 2012
I have been asked... in many instances... since we have begun our travels; "How do you homeschool on the road?"  Especially as we have not been in any one place for very long to establish "routines" which could progress us through workbooks (or any other unit of study)!

Just a Season

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Nothing is as expected these days.  Who knew when we hit the road almost 8 weeks ago now that, in our very own country, Internet access and regular blogging would be so difficult.  Most days I have done alright without this connection... but some days I just miss tapping into the virtual world, saying "HI" and seeing what everyone else is doing.

September in Review
In our mobileness, Blog articles were VERY sporatic in September.  But here you can see an overview of our September and begining adventures:September in Review

 Rescued
Saturday, August 25, 2012
It was this lake, on this day with fluffy clouds drifting across the sky like sheep being herded to market... I was sure I could take it.  Me and Brooke (only 9) and a canoe.

In front of the Curriculum Closet
Saturday, August 18, 2012
Standing in front of my friend's curriculum closet, hearing her pour her heart out on hopes and dreams and heartache... I understood.  I think we all understand the triumphs and 'tragedies' of homeschooling.  O.K., not really tragedy... but it feels like it at times.

Smelling the Roses
Friday, June 29, 2012
This week we took time to smell the roses... literally.  And I am so glad we did.  This nose-to-the-grindstone mama has to schedule rose-smelling adventures and I can't say that is a good thing.....

Adventures off the Designated Path
Saturday, June 23, 2012
I'm big on adventures.  As far as I can tell... childhood should be an adventure and the joy of parenting (especially homeschooling) is to embark on daily adventures.  Summer is especially good for this!....

A Working Schedule
Friday, April 27, 2012
It starts with this statement:  What is... and what isn't working.

This is a necessary question to ask if we are to stay off the path of "overwhelmed" and on the path of "progressing to a goal" in the world of learning at home...
Leaning Into the Oars

Confessions of a Homeschool Mom: Spring Break
Friday, April 13, 2012
This is one of those "Confessions of a Homeschool Mom" posts... (anyone think we need a meme entitled as such?!)  Last month I shouted out to the world how, regardless of my 'paycheck' (or lack there-of) I would persevere.

I'm here to tell you, my perseverance waned... but I had help!

God Brought Us To It

Four years ago she complained when reading picture books and dug her heals in at the shear mention of a chapter book...
Where's the Paycheck?
Saturday, March 17, 2012
The birds are in almost deafening sing-song unison... spring is in the air.  I wish I could say our homeschool was laxed enough to seize spring fever ...
Some Days

When Writing Seems Hard
Friday, February 17, 2012
This week I was blessed with the opportunity to submit an article to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's digital newsletter, The Homeschool Minute.  As I prepared an answer to the idea, "When Writing Seems Hard" God put today's blogging on my heart and felt compelled to share...
